Ardrox 8530 is a high-sensitivity, ready-to-use fluorescent magnetic ink manufactured by Chemetall (a BASF brand) for non-destructive testing (NDT). It is specifically designed for wet-method Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to locate surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials.
Key Technical Specifications
- Composition: Consists of fine-particle fluorescent iron oxide suspended in a high-flashpoint, low-aromatic carrier oil (petroleum distillate).
- Application Format: Commonly distributed in portable 400 ml aerosol spray cans or bulk 5-litre pails.
- Inspection Requirement: Must be used under a UV-A black light (typically 320–400 nm) to reveal glowing, highly visible crack indications.
Primary Defect Detection
Because of its extremely high particle contrast under UV light, it reveals critical micro-defects:
- Fatigue and grinding cracks
- Surface-breaking flaws and deep laps
- Non-metallic subsurface inclusions
Common Use Cases
It is primarily utilized for precision field testing and critical engineering applications. Testing procedures generally follow these phases:
- Pre-cleaning: Cleaning the target metal surface with a chemical cleaner like Ardrox 5319
- Magnetisation: Applying a magnetic field using an NDT yoke or bench unit.
- Application: Agitating the Ardrox 8530 container well and spraying a light, uniform coat over the magnetised area.
- Evaluation: Inspecting the area under a UV lamp to easily detect glowing structural cracks
